Water starts flowing into Lake Eyre
The water is coming! Due to the massive amounts of water from Queensland’s flood of the century, Lake Eyre in the far north of South Australia, has remarkably started to fill for the second time in 2 years.
The Warburton Groove, which is the main channel that flows in to the lake, is now about 1km wide & rising & this is thought to be enough water to half fill Lake Eyre. Creeks & rivers surrounding the Lake are known to be upi to 7m deep or 3m deeper than last years flooding of the area.
Recent heavy rains in northern SA have increased chances of tourists flocking to the area to see this natural phenomenon take place as the Lake has only ever filled up 4 times in the last 100 years. Last year with water levels rising to 60% capacity fill, tens of thousands of different bird life flew into the area to breed & this year, things will be no different.
For now, pastoralist’s cannot keep the smiles off their faces as these recent flooding have refilled dry waterholes for several years to come & as reported on today’s ABC country hour, stock feed is reported to be up elbow high! Good on em’ I reckon as recent seasons have been extremely tough & they are over due for some good years.
Goin Off Safaris have plenty of flight availabilities for 1/2 days to the Ultimate4 day air safari, & with the early & persistent rains/floods, the best time to view the “big inland sea” will be from late May onwards. It really is going to be a picture!
